Carmenère Riserva Nostrano 2021 – Vignalta
Nostrano CarmEnère Riserva Nostrano 2021 – Vignalta 🍷🇮🇹
From the volcanic slopes of the Colli Euganei DOC in Veneto, this refined Carménère (with a touch of Cabernet Franc) brings out the best of the region’s mineral-rich soils and naturally elegant structure.
Vignalta — one of the pioneers of high-altitude winemaking in the Euganean Hills — has long been known for crafting expressive reds that balance spice, fruit purity, and that unmistakable volcanic depth.
Facts about Vignalta & its winemaking:
The estate was founded by Lucio Gomiero in 1980 and is today recognised as one of the most important producers in the Euganean Hills.
The vineyards are located on south-facing slopes in the Colli Euganei, where volcanic-origin soils and a mild Mediterranean climate with strong diurnal temperature shifts allow grapes of extraordinary quality.
Their vineyard mapping and site selection are rigorous: they study geological maps, vine leaf analyses and past wine analyses to identify terroirs (crus) within the estate. For example, the “Gemola” vineyard is on decomposed lava rock and is treated differently than the sedimentary-soil “Arquà” plots.
In the cellar they follow a “minimalist” approach: the vinification is designed to preserve the aromas and flavours of each grape bunch, with winemaking processes geared to express the terroir.
The winery facilities are built into the rock under Arquà Petrarca, allowing natural, stable temperature and humidity for maturation in wooden barrels.
I was particularly impressed by this wine, and even though I had already highlighted it in an Instagram story, it unquestionably merits a second mention. 🍷👏
Juicy and finely spiced, with vibrant pepper notes, layers of graphite, and a refreshing touch of mint, it showcases Carménère interpreted through the distinctive volcanic and mineral-driven terroir of Veneto. 🇮🇹
