Casanova di Neri – Rosso di Montalcino 2023

Casanova di Neri – Rosso di Montalcino 2023

A Fresh Expression of Sangiovese from an Iconic Estate

The 2023 Rosso di Montalcino from Casanova di Neri is a reminder of why this category has become so compelling in recent years: purity, immediacy, and a clear sense of place, all delivered with the estate’s signature finesse. Sourced from the northeastern slopes of Montalcino, where higher elevations preserve acidity and vibrancy, this wine offers a beautifully transparent reading of young Sangiovese.

In the glass, it opens with bright red fruits, delicate floral tones, and subtle layers of sweet spice and tobacco. The palate is lively and precise, with freshness at the core, supported by ripe, polished tannins that make the wine both approachable and structurally sound. The finish lingers on cherry, balsamic nuances, and gentle savoury depth.

What impressed me most is its effortless drinkability straight from the bottle — generous fruit wrapped in refined spice — yet it also has the balance to evolve gracefully over the next few years for those with patience.

A bit of history: Casanova di Neri’s first-ever bottling dates back to 1977, released as “Vino Rosso dai Vigneti di Brunello”, predating their inaugural Brunello from the 1978 vintage. Their first official Rosso arrived in 1982, and the estate later earned international acclaim with the first Brunello ever to reach #1 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines.

A vibrant, terroir-driven Rosso that beautifully bridges immediate pleasure and potential — exactly what thoughtful Sangiovese lovers seek.
