Domaine Ott: Premium Rosé from Provence
I recently had the chance to attend a focused tasting of Domaine Ott, led by brand ambassador Christophe Coppola Renard, invited by Mael Lebrun ( Authentic Vins & Spiritueux)
This wasn’t just another Provence rosé tasting. It was a reminder of what happens when a family builds something over generations — with a clear philosophy: quality over volume, always.
What stood out immediately is that Ott is not just a “rosé brand” — it’s a technical, vineyard-driven estate with over 130 years of history, founded in 1896 by Marcel Ott and still family-run today.
Founded in 1896 by Marcel Ott, a visionary originally from Alsace, Domaine Ott remains a family estate now in its 4th generation, led by Jean-François Ott.
A key milestone came in 2004, when Louis Roederer acquired the estate — bringing additional precision and long-term vision without compromising identity.
At Ott, grapes are grown specifically for rosé, not downgraded from red wine production. That alone already separates them from many producers
Three Estates, One Identity
Domaine Ott works across two key appellations:
Côtes de Provence
Bandol
With three estates:
Château de Selle → finesse & minerality
Clos Mireille → coastal influence & salinity
Château Romassan → structure & Mourvèdre
Vineyard & Winemaking Philosophy
Everything starts in the vineyard:
Organic farming practices
Hand harvesting
Strict parcel selection
For rosé:
Direct pressing (no maceration)
Very short skin contact
Gentle pressing of whole bunches
Temperature-controlled fermentation
No malolactic fermentation → preserving freshness
The goal is always precision, purity, and balance.
By Ott Rosé
The most accessible expression — but still very precise, with aromas of peach, strawberry, light red melon, yellow apple, with a touch of floral notes. The palate is soft and charming, with a slightly riper fruit profile and a clean finish showing pineapple and fresh strawberry.
Style:
Fruit-forward
Rounded and easy-drinking
Less structured, more immediate pleasure
This is where Ott shows its ability to make a refined but approachable rosé, consistent year after year.
Château de Selle Rosé
A clear step up in precision and structure, more delicate aromatically but more focused: citrus, white peach, grapefruit, with a clear mineral edge. On the palate, sharper acidity, more tension, with yellow apple, salinity, and a long, clean finish.
Style:
Mineral-driven
More vertical and structured
Gastronomic rosé
This is not just a summer wine — it works at the table and can age better than most Provence rosés.
Étoile
The most complex and unique wine of the lineup, pale and elegant, showing peach skin, apricot, citrus blossom, pear, and a subtle pastry note from lees. There’s a slight bitterness adding structure, with freshness and salinity throughout. Hints of vanilla and a more layered, evolving palate.
Style:
Multi-dimensional
More texture and depth
Built for aging
Important: not to be served too cold — it opens up beautifully with temperature.
Étoile is a blend of the three estates and the 2 appelations, combining:
finesse (Selle)
salinity (Clos Mireille)
structure (Romassan)
An exceptional Rosé : “winemaker’s wine” within the Ott range, that offer not only finesse, precision but also aging potential.
Domaine Ott is often associated with lifestyle and luxury, but behind that image there is serious work:
precision viticulture + technical winemaking + consistency of style
This tasting reinforced one thing:
great rosé is not simple — it’s one of the most demanding styles to produce at a high level.
