Prunotto – Langhe Nebbiolo 2023 “Occhetti”
Prunotto is a historic winery based in Alba in the Langhe region of Piedmont — a cornerstone area for some of Italy’s most respected red wines. The estate has been producing wine since the early 20th century and is known for crafting elegant expressions of native Piedmontese varieties, including Nebbiolo. Their Langhe Nebbiolo “Occhetti” has been made since the 1970s and showcases the classic character of Nebbiolo while remaining approachable and expressive of its terroir.
On the nose, this 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo opens with ripe red fruit accented by delicate floral notes of rose and violet that feel inviting and elegant. On the palate, the wine offers vibrant red fruit supported by lively acidity and fine, refined tannins that give structure without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is balanced and graceful, making for an approachable yet distinct expression of Nebbiolo that’s enjoyable now with food.
This wine is ideal with rich, slow-cooked winter dishes like oven-roasted bacon and potatoes, gamey sausages, or hearty moose paired with sides like red onions, chives, lemon, choucroute and pickles. Its acidity and structure help cut through fat while complementing savory flavor combinations beautifully.
This bottle was a perfect start to 2026 — exactly what you want on a cold day when comfort meets elegance. The fresh acidity and present tannins made every sip cut through the richness of our slow-cooked meal, lifting the whole experience instead of feeling heavy. The combination of red fruit and floral notes with wintery, savory sides made it feel lively and fun, proving once again that cold days absolutely can be fun (especially with wine and good food on the table.
