Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino 2020: A Classic Montalcino Name in a Generous Vintage

Few estates are as closely linked to the history of Montalcino as Fattoria dei Barbi. The Colombini family has owned land in the area since 1352, while Fattoria dei Barbi itself has been in the family since the end of the 18th century. The estate has produced Brunello since 1892 and was an early pioneer in bringing the wine beyond Tuscany, eventually exporting it to markets across Europe, America and Asia. Its familiar “Blue Label” Brunello remains the heart of the estate’s production and one of its most recognizable wines.

The 2020 is 100% Sangiovese, sourced from estate vineyards between roughly 300 and 500 metres on marl and alberese limestone soils. After fermentation, the wine spends a total of two years in oak, beginning in small- to medium-sized barrels before moving to larger vessels, followed by at least four months in bottle. Fattoria dei Barbi describes 2020 as a year of warm, dry summer conditions moderated by cool nights—conditions they considered particularly favourable for Sangiovese. The Consorzio also gave the vintage its highest five-star evaluation.

The 2020 Brunello opens with concentrated sour cherry and ripe red berry fruit, layered with dried herbs, spice and subtle earthy nuances. With time in the glass, floral touches of violet and a cooler herbal character add lift and complexity. These impressions fit closely with the estate's own description of red berries, wild herbs, nutmeg, pepper, mint and violet, while published notes also highlight tart red fruit, cedar, earth and savoury spice.

On the palate, what impressed me most was the balance. The fruit has ripeness and concentration, but vibrant acidity and firm, well-shaped tannins keep everything energetic and precise. Even at around 14.5% alcohol, the wine never feels heavy; the different elements work together rather than competing for attention. The finish is long and savoury, leaving the impression of a Brunello that is already expressive but still has considerable room to evolve. Fattoria dei Barbi itself gives the 2020 a potential ageing window of 15–50 years, underscoring the traditional, cellar-worthy style of the wine.

What impressed me about the Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino 2020 was not simply its concentration, but how controlled that concentration felt. There is plenty of ripe fruit and structure, yet the acidity, tannins and warmth of the vintage remain remarkably well integrated. Nothing feels excessive.

The sour cherry, dried herbs, spice and earthy character also give the wine that savoury dimension I look for in Sangiovese from Montalcino. It feels rooted in the classic Brunello profile rather than driven simply by ripeness.

With some air, it is already drinking beautifully today, and a decant allows the fruit and more savoury nuances to open up. But there is clearly more to come. For anyone with the patience to cellar a few bottles, the structure and freshness suggest a very interesting evolution over the coming years.

For me, that combination of history, classic character and balance is what makes the Blue Label particularly compelling: this is not simply a famous name from Montalcino, but a wine that still explains why that reputation was built in the first place.

Food suggestions

This is a Brunello that naturally calls for dishes with depth and richness. Bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast beef, braised meats and aged Pecorino are all natural partners, while the wine's savoury character makes it particularly compelling with game.

A very Montalcino-inspired pairing would be pappardelle with wild boar ragù, where the acidity refreshes the palate and the tannins meet the richness of the meat. Venison, herb-roasted lamb or slow-cooked beef would work equally well. These choices closely reflect Fattoria dei Barbi's own recommendations of roasted and grilled red meats, game, venison, stewed wild boar and mature cheeses
