Lamole di Lamole – Chianti Classico Riserva 2021

Lamole di Lamole is located in the small hillside village of Lamole, one of the highest and most historic areas within the Chianti Classico appellation. The vineyards sit between approximately 400 and 650 metres above sea level, where cooler temperatures help preserve freshness and aromatic precision in the wines. The estate works with the classic alberese limestone and galestro soils typical of the region, both known for contributing structure, minerality and elegance to Sangiovese-based wines.

Their Chianti Classico Riserva follows the appellation rules requiring at least 24 months of aging, allowing the wine to gain additional complexity, depth and texture while maintaining the vibrant identity of Sangiovese

In the glass, this 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva opens with aromas of sour cherry and raspberry, lifted by violet notes, dried herbs and a touch of earthy spice. These savoury and floral elements align beautifully with the classic profile expected from high-altitude Sangiovese grown in Lamole, finishing with a touch of sweet spices. On the palate, the wine shows vibrant acidity and firm yet elegant tannins that give structure without heaviness, while the red fruit remains fresh and energetic throughout.

What I really enjoyed about this Chianti Classico Riserva was the balance between freshness and structure. The altitude of Lamole clearly comes through in the wine’s energy and aromatic lift, while the Riserva aging adds depth without taking away the purity of the fruit. The sour cherry, herbs and earthy spice made it feel distinctly Tuscan and incredibly satisfying with food. This wine has also a great potential for cellaring, if you have the patience to wait 5-10 years it will develop further tertiary aromas and gain complexity.

This is exactly the kind of Sangiovese I love opening with hearty pasta dishes or grilled meats — elegant and structured, but still vibrant and easy to enjoy at the table. The pairing with pappardelle al ragù especially felt natural, as the acidity and tannins brought lift and balance to the richness of the sauce without overpowering it.
