Silvio Grasso Langhe Dolcetto 2024
Founded in 1927, Silvio Grasso is an 11-hectare, family-run estate based in La Morra. Alessio Federico began bottling the entire production in the mid-1980s and now manages the winery with his wife, Marilena, and their sons Paolo and Silvio.
The Langhe Dolcetto is made from 100% Dolcetto grown in a 1.5-hectare, southeast-facing vineyard planted in 1988 on calcareous soils. According to the estate’s technical information, the wine ferments on its skins in stainless steel for ten days, then remains in steel for seven to eight months before a brief refinement in bottle. This straightforward élevage preserves the grape’s fruit, freshness and immediately approachable character.
This is the kind of red wine I enjoy opening without thinking twice. It does not require a special dinner, a long decant or a serious occasion; sometimes, you simply want a glass of red wine that feels fresh, honest and easy to return to.
What made the Silvio Grasso Langhe Dolcetto 2024 appealing was its balance between pleasure and character. The juicy berries and floral lift made it immediately inviting, but the pepper, gentle tannins and bitter-almond finish kept it from feeling overly simple. It is an everyday Piedmontese red in the best sense of the expression: light enough for a relaxed evening, yet distinctive enough to remind you where it comes from.
The 2024 Langhe Dolcetto opens with juicy red berries and a delicate floral lift, followed by a subtle touch of pepper. On the palate, it is fresh and light to medium-bodied, with enough tannin to give the wine definition without taking away from its relaxed, easy-drinking style. A gently bitter almond note appears on the finish, adding a classic Dolcetto signature and a savoury counterpoint to the fruit.
This is a flexible red for informal meals and shared plates. Its juicy fruit and light tannic grip make it a natural choice for appetizers, charcuterie, pizza and chicken brochettes.
It also worked particularly well with charcoal-grilled yakitori. The wine’s red fruit complemented the caramelized edges of the meat, while its peppery and almond-like savoury notes echoed the smoke from the grill. Served slightly cool, it would also be a lovely match for grilled vegetables, roast chicken or simple Piedmontese antipasti.
