Tenuta Rocca – Barolo 2020

Tenuta Rocca is a historic Barolo estate situated near Castiglione Falletto in the heart of Piedmont’s Barolo zone. Founded in the early 19th century, the winery has a long tradition of crafting classic Barolo, emphasizing vineyard expression, elegance and age-worthy structure. Their Barolo wines are typically made from 100% Nebbiolo and benefit from careful oak aging and precise cellar techniques that highlight both terroir and the grape’s noble character. This wine is certified organic/bio.

On the nose, this Barolo opens with an elegant floral lift of rose petals and violet, followed by ripe red berries and a subtle savoury, balsamic touch that adds complexity. These impressions echo the producer’s description of cherry and floral spice, while other sources also mention hints of pepper, leather and gentle oak, which align well with what I experienced. On the palate, the wine shows a great balance between vibrant acidity, firm yet refined tannins and oak influence, giving it structure without heaviness. The finish is long and refined, with lingering notes of fresh fruit and savoury elements, making it enjoyable now while also showing potential for further development with age.

This Barolo Tenuta Rocca 2020 aligned perfectly with an outdoor winter barbecue, which honestly made the whole experience even better. We had beef steak, caramelized onions and vegetables, wild game sausages, and fire-baked potatoes finished with butter, rosemary and black pepper.

The wine’s bright acidity and firm yet refined tannins brought balance and lift to the richness of the food, while the savoury and balsamic notes echoed the smoky, herbal and peppery flavours from the grill. This is the kind of pairing that reminds you Barolo isn’t just a “serious tasting wine” — it can absolutely shine with rustic, comforting food and good company, even in the cold.

This wine pairs beautifully with rich, hearty meals. Think grilled beef steak with caramelized onions and vegetables, fire-baked potatoes with butter, rosemary and black pepper, or wild game sausages — the acidity and structured tannins help cut through fat, while the savoury character complements smoky, herbal flavours. Also with more classical Piemontese dishes : Brasato al Barolo, Osso Buco, Wild Boar/Game stews, Mushroom Risotto , Tajarin with meat ragu.
